in the passing game
Oakland, CA – September 19, 2025 - Cardinal Newman continued its hot streak Friday night, following up last week's 49–0 shutout of Armijo with another statement performance — a 39–7 road win over Bishop O'Dowd.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
The Cardinals (3–1) came out firing and never looked back, scoring 30 unanswered points in the first half to put the game out of reach before the break. Running back Malakai Pathoumnerack set the pace with a monster performance on the ground, carrying the ball 15 times for 161 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged an eye-popping 10.7 yards per carry, highlighted by a 48-yard burst that had the Dragons' defense reeling.
Quarterback Carmine Guevara was efficient in the passing game, completing 10 of 13 passes for 152 yards while spreading the ball around to multiple targets. Zion Cargill led all receivers with 57 yards on two catches, while Jonah Bertoli hauled in four passes for 54 yards.
Balanced Attack and Big Plays
Newman piled up chunk plays all night, with "Path" leading the charge but several teammates stepping up. Brody Estrela added 50 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Guevara chipped in 13 yards on the ground. On special teams, Kordell Strane gave the Cardinals another spark with a 63-yard kickoff return.
By the final whistle, Newman's offense had rolled up over 400 yards of total offense, keeping the Dragons' defense guessing all night.
Defense Brings the Pressure
The Cardinals' defense was just as dominant, holding Bishop O'Dowd scoreless until the fourth quarter. Bertoli showed his two-way impact, tallying six tackles and two sacks from his defensive spot, while Kahlio Vaetoe recorded three tackles for loss. Ka'vaughn Penney added an interception as Newman's secondary smothered the Dragons' passing game.
The defensive front controlled the line of scrimmage, forcing Bishop O'Dowd into negative plays and limiting their ground attack. The Dragons managed just one late touchdown to avoid the shutout.
Special Teams Special
Kicker Devin Taylor was flawless on extra points, drilling all five PAT attempts to round out the scoring for Newman. He just missed a long field goal attempt which had plenty of distance
Looking Ahead
With the victory, Cardinal Newman improves to 3–1, riding back-to-back dominant wins into next week's non-league showdown against Pleasant Valley (2–2) in Chico. before heading onto the bye week. Bishop O'Dowd, now 1–3, will look to regroup when they return home to face Tennyson in West Alameda County Foothill league play.
