UUkiah, CA – May 8, 2025 — The Cardinal Newman High School boys track and field team showcased exceptional talent at the 2025 North Bay League (NBL) Championships, securing second place overall with 103 points, narrowly trailing Analy High School's 111 points.

Sprinting Excellence
Sophomore Zion Cargill emerged as a sprinting sensation, capturing titles in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. He clocked a swift 10.90 seconds in the 100m and 22.44 seconds in the 200m, showcasing his speed and earning top honors in both events.
Relay Dominance
The Cardinals' 4x100-meter relay team demonstrated exceptional timing and speed, clinching first place with a time of 42.67 seconds. The team, composed of Devin Carranza, Jesse Meyers, Jonah Bertoli, and Zion Cargill, executed near-flawless baton exchanges to dominate the event.
Field Event Excellence
In the field events, junior Oliver Currie soared to victory in the long jump, achieving a remarkable distance of 22 feet, 6.5 inches.
Junior Devon Bertoli delivered a powerful performance in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 60 feet, 9.5 inches.
In the discus throw, senior Vicente Adan secured first place with an impressive mark of 165 feet, 1 inch.
Looking Ahead
With these strong performances, several Cardinal Newman athletes have qualified for the upcoming North Coast Section (NCS) Redwood Empire Area Meetnext week in Fortuna. The team aims to build on their success and continue their momentum in the postseason competitions.
