CALLIE HOWARD DELIVERING A PITCH
PLEASANT HILL, CA - After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning when College Park's Vanessa Brunal scored on a sacrifice fly, the Cardinals responded in a big way in the fourth. Cienna Alvarez sparked the rally with a single to left field, followed by Giana Tamayo's single to center. Alvarez later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mia RobInson, and then Sloane Burke delivered a clutch RBI single up the middle to give Cardinal Newman a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Senior pitcher Callie Howard was solid in the circle, going the distance for the win. Howard allowed just five hits and one earned run over seven innings, striking out eight while issuing only two walks. Her strong performance held the Falcons' offense in check, while the Cardinals' bats continued to apply pressure.
Howard and Andrea Mansbery each collected two hits to lead Cardinal Newman's offense. Tamayo, Burke, Alvarez, and Mia Robinson all contributed RBIs in a balanced scoring attack.
For College Park, Kaitlyn Sparks and Alexis Weiler each tallied two hits, while Weiler and Viviana Moguel drove in runs to keep the Falcons within striking distance.
With the victory, Cardinal Newman Improves to 4-5 on year and builds momentum heading into their next match-up, a home league game against Rancho Cotate on Thursday. The Cardinals will look to extend their winning streak and continue to improve.
