Second Half Rally Propels Newman Soccer to Victory

Trailing 1-Nil at the half, the Cardinal Newman Boys soccer team exploded for 3 goals after the break and defeated visiting Rancho Cotate 3-1 on Senior Night.

Sebastian Favre led the way with 2 goals while Sammy Abbott added another for the Cardinals.  Keying the second half comeback were center backs Liam Curry and Gio Demauro.  They were dominant in helping Keeper Amiel Mengistab holding the Cougars in check.

Mengistab continues to develop and improve.  He has only given up 2 goals in the last 4 games!

In scoring the equalizer, Nathan Lubiga won a through ball in a good battle with a Rancho defender. From there Nathan crossed to Faivre on th e back post where Sebastian netted it for his first goal of the game.

Sammy Abbott gave Newman the lead on a corner kick that bounced around the box until Abbott settled it and drilled it home for 2-1 lead.

Later, Newman scored the sealer as Faivre took a free kick and curled it perfectly around the wall and into the lower left corner of the goal to make the final 3-1.

The Cardinals are now 7-4-5 on the season.  The win moves them into a tie for third place with Montgomery.

CN closes out NBL Oak play on Friday as they host League champ PIner at Ed Lloyd Field.  Kick off is at 7 PM following the JV Game at 5.
