The Cardinal Newman Cardinals Men's Soccer team was down 1-0 against San Marin with 10 minutes left in the 2nd Half and were relentlessly pressing the Mustangs. The Cardinals moved the ball around their midfield and back four, trying to create chances for a game tying goal. Newman got close and had a few corners as well as a shot that was just missed by Saul Cuellar.
San Marin Goalie Daniel Gonzalez was playing very well and was just under 5 minutes away from advancing to the semifinals. After a corner batted out of the box by Gonzalez, the Cardinals reorganized and went on the attack once again.
It was a cold and rainy night and Newman was aggressively subbing to keep up their attack. The Cardinals got a throw-in and moved it around to Jude Stone, who has been a star for the Cardinals in the midfield this season. Jude knocked it in from 10 yards out to tie the game and the Cardinals bench went wild.
Although Newman had the equalizer, the game had yet to be decided. A minute later, Dominic Sanchez was sent off with a red Card, which knocked San Marin down to 10 men. Newman took this opportunity and moved it down the right side of the pitch. They moved it inside and had a few good chances in extra time. One of them, the last one, was blocked by a Mustang defender, but Saul Cuellar was there and scored to give Newman a 2-1 lead with under a minute of extra time left. The Cardinals held strong on defense and punched their ticket to the semifinals.Â
   The Cardinals have had a great season this year and with their comeback win Saturday, Newman has already gone farther than last year, where they lost 1-0 in the NCS Quarterfinals to Piedmont. The Cardinals are 20-2-2 and look very strong heading into their Semifinal match up against Lick-Wilmerding which will kick off Wednesday at 7 PM at Ed Lloyd Field.    The Cardinal Newman Women's Soccer team took care of business on Friday, beating Piedmont 2-0 in a thrilling game. Goalkeeper Talia Woods finished with 7 saves, including a great save on a penalty kick which kept her clean sheet.
The Cardinals pressed the Highlanders throughout the game, specifically by moving the ball through the right side of the pitch. The Cardinals utilized their midfielders to press the ball into the right corner of the Highlanders side of the field and set up a lot of crossing opportunities.
The Cardinals had 4 corner kicks early on and one of them paid off with Hennessy Saunders scoring a header ten minutes into the ball game. The Cardinals kept pressing, utilizing Bella D'Amico, Alex Barnes and Abella Hunter as well as Eleanora Snearly to move the ball and create chances.
Newman scored again, 3 minutes into the second half, again off a corner kick, with Eleanora Snearly curling in her own corner kick to put Newman up 2-0. Newman played great defense for the rest of the game, holding back the relentless Highlander attack to advance to the semifinals.Â
   Newman will face Marin Academy Tuesday at 7 PM at Ed Lloyd Field for a trip to the NCS Championship. The Cardinals get a chance at revenge Tuesday as nearly a year ago, the Wildcats beat the Cardinals 2-1 in the NCS Semifinals to end Newman's NCS Championship hopes.
