Taking on visiting Bishop O' Dowd of Oakland, Newman scored 3 in the 5th and 4 in the 6th to take an 8-2 victory on opening day at Clyde Smith Field.
Newman Scored first with
Jack Lazark collecting a two out double in the bottom of the 1st. He would later score on a passed ball to make it 1-0.
Starting pitcher
Mason Lerma would cruise through the first 3 innings, until the Dragons would get their first and only hit off the lefty an RBI single driving in the tying run.
The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the 5th. Lazark would single and move up on a wild pitch.
Landon Rota would drive him in to give CN the lead.
Brady Boyd followed that with a triple.
Tanner Bradley would plate Boyd with another base hit to make it 4-1 Newman after 5.
Bradley would pitch the 6th giving up 1 unearned run and
Evan Sandoval finished up the 7th after the Cardinals scored 4 more runs in the 6th. Rota would have a 2 RBI single, Boyd an RBI single and Bradley with a run scoring base hit as well.
The Cardinals collected 13 hits on the day. The only blemish 3 errors which led to 2 unearned runs scored by BOD.
"It was good get to get the first game in and get a win. We swung the bats well and had some quality at bats but do need to tighten up the defense which would allow Mason to get deeper into the game. Overall it was a good first game," Said Coach Derek Debenedetti after the win.
