UKIAH, CA- The Cardinal Newman varsity baseball team jumped out to an early lead and then held off a late rally to defeat Ukiah 8–7 on Friday.
Newman wasted little time getting on the board. In the top of the first inning, the Cardinals erupted for four runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Will Pratt that gave Cardinal Newman an early advantage.
The Cardinals added another run in the second to make it 5–1, then pushed the lead to 7–3 with a two-run fifth inning before adding an insurance run in the sixth. Ukiah answered with a four-run sixth inning to cut the deficit to one, but Newman's bullpen was able to close out the win.
Markie Douglas earned the victory on the mound for Cardinal Newman, striking out eight over five innings while allowing three runs, only one earned. Jace Wooley was dominant in relief, striking out four over the final 1? innings to secure the save. Legend Haile also appeared in relief during the sixth inning.
The Cardinals collected eight hits on the day, led by Colin Bone, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored three runs from the leadoff spot. Jacob Wood added two hits, while Wooley also had two hits and drove in a run. Pratt's first-inning double accounted for three RBIs and set the tone offensively.
Ukiah finished with six hits and was led by George Gibbs, who went 2-for-2 with four RBIs.
Cardinal Newman improves its early-season momentum and will return to action Tuesday with a road game at Casa Grande.
