San Rafael, Calif.- In an excellent, high-level non-league soccer match-up between very talented teams, Newman came up with a brilliant defensive performance and pulled off a 1- nil victory. Both teams played well but Newman had just enough to win its 4th game in a row to start the season. This early season win could have playoff seeding implications later in the year as Newman a Div.4 NCS entry, defeated the defending D3 champion Wildcats.
The CN goal came while Marin Academy was in possession, they played the ball back to their goalkeeper, but
Nathan Lubega (junior) was able to come up with a steal and score into the open net.
In the 2nd half, a CN player received his second caution (yellow card), so for the last 10 minutes of the game, they had to play down a man. The team was able to stay organized defensively, block shots, make extra efforts to cover the open spaces, and clear any crosses that were sent into the box.
It was a true team win. Goalkeeper
Devon Taylor (freshman) secured his second shutout of the season.
CN's next game is at Healdsburg (2-1) on Wednesday.
Marin Academy returns 14 seniors on a team that went 25-1 last year, and won not only the D3 NCS Championship but also CIF D4 NorCal Championship, so this was a good win for CN.
