Richmond, Ca - Cardinal Newman got off to a fast start, and then poured it on, on the way to a 49 - 20 victory over De Anza. The Cardinals took advantage of De Anza's inexperience, creating numerous turnovers, that in turn created great field position for the offense.

Quarterback Matthew Hilden played well, missing only one open receiver all night. He ended with 4 touchdown passes and had his best game as a varsity starter. He finished with 162 yards and one Int.

The Cardinals recovered a pooch-kick to a soft spot in De Anza's return team on the opening kickoff. Then on the very first play from scrimmage Hilden found Zachary Kelly for a touchdown and the Cardinals jumped out to an early 7-0 lead.

The Newman first team defense played well all night led by Zachary Homan, who led the team in tackles. Sophomore Zachariah Raia also had a great game defensively, while Zachary Kelly had a big game on both sides of the ball.

"Our offense executed well, we ran the ball well and tight end Santiago Adan had his best game blocking," Said head coach Richard Sanchez after the win. "Our Quarterback is gaining

confidence and making the right reads," He added.

On the night Newman had 3 rushing TDs and 4 passing scores.  The balanced attack led to a 42-0 lead at one point in the first half

Coach Sanchez also pointed out the play of Kaize Steverson and Nicholas Ayre as important keys to the team's success.

With the win, the Cardinals end their fourth consecutive road game with a 3- 1 record to start the season. Next week they finally return home for a BIG match up with inter-section rival St. Mary's of Stockton.
