CARMINE GUEVARA CALLED ON TO RUN
THE OFFENSE AND LEADS TEAM TO VICTORY
SANTA ROSA, CA- Cardinal Newman delivered a dramatic postseason victory Friday night, defeating San Marin 21–14 in double overtime in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs at The Bowl in Santa Rosa. The win improves the Cardinals to 10–1 and sends them into next week's semifinal at Ed Lloyd Field.
San Marin opened the scoring with a scoop-and-score fumble return late in the first quarter, but Newman responded in the second when senior Brody Estrela powered in a 1-yard touchdown to tie the game 7–7.
The Cardinals were forced to adjust when senior quarterback LT Retamoza exited early with a shoulder re-injury. Junior Carmine Guevara stepped in at QB and shined, rushing for 72 yards including a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave Newman a 14–7 lead.
A blocked punt returned for a touchdown by San Marin in the fourth quarter forced overtime. After both teams came up empty in the first OT period, senior running back Malakai Pathoumnourak (Path) delivered the winning moment — a powerful 19-yard touchdown run in the second overtime.
Newman's defense dominated throughout — allowing just 70 rushing yards and 63 passing yards and no offensive touchdowns in the entire game.
Head coach Frank McManus praised his team's composure and toughness in close-game situations and confirmed Retamoza is expected to return for the semifinal, with Guevara and freshman Cash Boyd continuing to get reps.
