Napa, Ca - After giving up a touchdown on Vintage's first possession of the night, Cardinal Newman's defense came up huge and shut down the Crushers on the way to a 27-8 road win.
The Vintage offense would threaten several times but Newman would deny them each and every time.
Trailing 8-0 in the second, Newman got the offense going and put together a scoring drive capped by quarterback
Matthew Hilden's one yard run to make it 8-7. On their next possession, Newman would strike again,
Kaize Steverson taking it across from 8 yards out to give the Cardinals the lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Vintage moved down to the 2 yard line but on 4th and 1 the Cardinals swarmed to the ball and held.
Zachary Homan came up big all night for the defense and made some big, tough runs on offense as well.
"Zack was a beast tonight," Said head coach
Richard Sanchez. "It was a great team effort with so many young players having to fill in because of injuries. To get experience is great but even better in a winning situation." He said after the victory.
Coach Sanchez pointed out Homan, Steverson, Nicholas Ayer and
Zachary Kelly as key defensive contributors. He was most proud of the offensive line. Missing 3 starters and yet creating holes and protecting QB
Matthew Hilden all night.
Newman capped the victory with an amazing 18 play 97 yard drive from the 1 yard line, grinding the clock and finding the end zone.
Zachary Kelly caught a TD pass in the third and
Santiago Adan for the final score in the 4th.
The Cardinals are now 2-1 on the season and travel to De Anza next week before finally getting a home game on the 23rd vd St. Mary's of Stockton.
