The Cardinal Newman softball team jumped out to a 4 run lead then held on for a 6-5 road win over Montgomery. The big hit for Newman came in the top of the 6th as
Paytin Salfi homered to give the Cardinals a 6-4 lead. Monty scored in the bottom half of the inning but
Callie Howard shut out the Vikings in the 7th to earn the complete game victory. This was Paytin's 8th HR of the year.
Salfi finished with 2 hits and 3 runs scored on the day, while
Mackenzie Dennis rapped out 2 hits and
Sarah Khoury had 2 RBI's.
Howard struck out 6 on 85 pitches. Despite giving up 9 hits, she kept Montgomery in check at critical times to hold on for the win.
Newman is now 9-9 overall and 6-3 in league play, a 1/2 game behind Rancho for first place in the NBL Oak division.
