The Cardinal Newman baseball squad got off to a slow start, spotting visiting Heritage 3 runs in the top of the first but rallied in the second, on the way to a 8-4 victory. The rally was lead by Gavin Rognlien who hit a bomb over the left field fence with Nathan Phelps aboard, giving Newman the lead for good. Earlier Phelps had doubled in a run to make it 4-2 as Newman tallied 4 runs in the inning, followed up by three more in the 3rd.
Starting pitcher Evan Sandoval struggled to get through the top of the first, dealing with a tight strike zone and a defensive error which led to him giving up 3 runs in the opening frame. After getting the lead however, the Cardinal's ace settled down and cruised through 4 innings to get his 3rd win of the season.
Lefty Mason Lerma finished up with 3 strong innings for the save, striking out 2 and walking none.
Jack Lazark contributed 2 hits and an RBI, while Jutice Brinson also had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and drove in 1.
Newman is now 5-1 on the year and has won 4 straight games. They host Rocklin on Saturday.
