SEBASTOPOL. CA — With sole possession of first place in the NBL-Oak Division at stake, the Cardinal Newman Cardinals delivered a composed second-half performance Thursday night, pulling away for a 2–0 victory over the Analy Tigers.
Fresh off a hard-fought 1–0 league win against the Ukiah Wildcats on Tuesday, Newman faced a quick turnaround and a scoreless first half. The match was locked 0–0 at the break as both teams battled through a physical, tightly contested opening 40 minutes.
After halftime, the Cardinals elevated their urgency and began to control the tempo. Roughly 20 minutes into the second half, sustained pressure finally paid off when Nathali Mendoza broke through with the opening goal.
Rather than settle, Newman stayed aggressive. The Cardinals continued to press Analy deep into its own end, and the pressure produced an insurance goal with eight minutes remaining. Lexi Gantenbein finished a well-timed sequence off an assist from Lily Haggin, sealing the result.
"This league is going to be a battle every night," head coach John Gilson said. "Every game is important in the league this year. For us, it was a good way to finish the first week."
The win moves Cardinal Newman to 2–0 in NBL-Oak play and 6–0–3 overall, placing the Cardinals alone atop the league standings early in the season.
Newman returns home Tuesday to host the Maria Carrillo Pumas, looking to continue its strong league start and defend first place.
