Santa Rosa, CA — Cardinal Newman volleyball had to reach deep into its competitive core Thursday night, rallying past a talented American High School squad in four sets, 23–25, 25–17, 25–22, 25–21, to advance to the North Coast Section Division 2 semifinals.

American came out strong winning the first set with great defense and timely hitting from the outside.  Newman trailed early in set two but began to gain momentum as the game went on.

The match tested the Cardinals' toughness and composure from start to finish, as the Eagles' relentless defense forced Newman to earn every point.

"We had to dig super deep tonight — the defense American played was the best we've seen all year," said head coach Daryl Kapis. "They were absolutely outstanding. Every point we earned was hard earned."

Leading the way was senior outside hitter Cienna Alvarez, who turned in a dominant all-around performance with 23 kills and 12 digs, carrying the Cardinals both offensively and emotionally.

"Cienna was an absolute beast tonight," Kapis said. "She led us offensively and spiritually on the court. She stayed focused in all aspects of her game, and when we needed her most, the team got on her back."

Senior setter Kimberly Wilson orchestrated the attack with precision, finishing with 50 assists and 17 digs in one of her strongest outings of the season.

Newman's balanced offense proved decisive, with sophomore outside hitter Emma Donnelly, sophomore opposite Gracie Acosta, and senior middle hitter Summer Binder each contributing 11 kills. On the defensive end, sophomore libero Sabina Walsh collected 13 digs, and sophomore defensive specialist Adeline Brockett added 10 more.

"We're super impressed with how we stayed tough as a team," Kapis added. "This was an incredible match that pushed us to take our skills to the highest level."

With the victory, Cardinal Newman advances to face St. Mary's (Berkeley) in the NCS Division 2 semifinals, with a trip to the championship match on the line.
