Sebastopol, Calif.- Coming off a NorCal Championship loss in the Boras Classic Tournament, the Cardinals looked to get back on track just in time for league play to begin. Led by a terrific starting pitching performance from
Josh Jannicelli and 14 hits at the plate Newman cruised to a 20-3 victory over the Analy Tigers.
Jannicelli was brilliant, throwing 4 perfect innings, striking out 6 Tigers and exiting with a 13-0 lead. Josh was equally impressive in his last start against Marin Catholic in the Boras opener. On that day he went 7 innings, allowed just 1 hit and struck out 10 to get Newman into the winners bracket. Jannicelli is now 4-1 on the year with an amazing 0.95 ERA.
What made Coach Derek Debennedetti even more pleased was the offense coming alive, starting with a 10 run top of the 2nd. The big hits in the inning coming on a double from
Sam Valenti (his second hit in the inning) and a 3 run homer from
Jacob Moreda. Newman added three more runs in the 3rd to make it 13-0.
In the 5th, Analy took advantage of Jannicelli's exit and scored 3, but CN continued to feast on Tiger pitching. In the 6th, Newman scored 6 more runs, including a Grand Slam from
Madden White to center field. The two home run game was a pleasant sight for Coach Debendetti as they had hit just one HR coming into league play.
Sam Valenti finished with 3 hits (1 double) on the day,
Isaac Phelps had 2 hits (1 double) and 2 RBI. As a team the Cardinals rapped out 5 extra base hits.
The teams meet again on Thursday at Clyde Smith Field as NBL Oak play continues. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
CN is now 9-4 (1-0) on the season.
