Santa Rosa, CA — Cardinal Newman's volleyball team came out strong in their first-round NCS D2 playoff match, sweeping Heritage in straight sets with scores of 25-14, 25-22, and 25-15. The Cardinals' win was fueled by consistent serving, powerful kills, and sharp teamwork, securing their spot in the next round where they will face Freedom High School on Saturday.
Junior libero Giana Tamayo was a standout at the serving line, delivering four aces and helping drive 32 points for the Cardinals. Her precise and aggressive serving kept the pressure on, as she set the tone for the Cardinals victory. "Her serving stat is a true testament to her ability to serve tough along with our front line being able to score once the ball is back on our side," said coach Daryl Kapis after the win.
Senior Julia Waller led the offense with 13 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Zoe Bardis followed closely behind with 12, showing the team's balanced attack. Junior setter Kimberly Wilson orchestrated the offense with 26 assists, with Waller adding an impressive 12 of her own to keep the Cardinals in control throughout the match.
The new playoff format heightened the match's intensity, and the Cardinals rose to the occasion. "Once we settled in, we played the way we were capable of," added coach Kapis.
Cardinal Newman will now prepare to face Freedom High School, who emerged victorious over Terra Linda in four sets. The teams are set to clash on Saturday night at 7:00 PM in the
