Petaluma, Calif. - The Newman Flag Team ran off 33 straight points to beat Casa Grande on the road Tuesday night. Casa took the opening possession and drove down the field to score, taking a quick 6-0 lead.
The Cardinals answered with a drive to tie it up.
Sarah Martinez caught a ten yard TD pass from
Callie Howard and from there Newman never looked back. After a TD and 2-point conversion Newman led 14-6 at the Half.
The Defense dominated in the second half as
Molly Friedman and
Juliet Diehl had clutch interceptions with big returns to set up short touchdown drives. For Diehl it was her 13th interception on the season.
Howard finished the night with 3 touchdown passes and rushed for over 60 yards, while
Hanna Maida ran for over 70 yards including a 25 yard run to the end zone. Freshman
Zella Grigg also had a TD run for Newman, a 30 yarder as the Cardinals put the game away.
Junior
Nicole DiMarco caught a TD as did
Estelle Puga for CN. Balance was the key on offense as Newman passed and ran the ball effectively all night.
The Cardinal are now 8-2 on the year and ranked 11th overall in NCS. Next week they travel to Rancho before a big re-match against Petaluma on Wednesday at Ed Lloyd Field. The Trojans are currently ranked 6th in the NCS and handed CN a tough loss earlier in the year. This will be a key game in determining playoff seeding in the upcoming Section Playoffs.
