Visiting cross-town rival Maria Carrillo, the Cardinals jumped out to a big lead and held on for an 8-5 win in North Bay League play. Newman used small ball to jump on the Pumas for 3 runs in the top of the first. After
Nate Phelps reached on an error, and
Anane Wilson walked, Newman used a double steal followed by a bunt by clean up hitter Vero Puoeu. The bunt caught Carrillo by surprise. Phelps scored from third and Puoeu beat out the bunt for a single. Puoeu then stole second to put two runners in scoring position for
Brady Boyd. Boyd delivered with a single and two RBIs to make it 3-0 Newman after one.
Starter
Mason Lerma held Carrillo in check allowing only one hit, while striking out six in five innings of work. He exited the game with only 67 pitches.
"He was very efficient and could have kept going ," Said Manager
Derek DeBenedetti. "It was a hot day and he is scheduled to pitch next week at the Boras Tourney, so we wanted to keep his pitch count low."
Newman added one run in the second and four more in the top of the sixth to take an 8-0 lead. Carrillo mounted a rally in the bottom half of the sixth, aided by a walk and two Newman errors, but the lead was never in jeopardy as
Jack Lazark came on in the seventh to close it out on the mound.
Brady Boyd finished the day with three hits and three RBIs.
Anane Wilson and Landen Rota added two hits each. Newman amassed 13 hits in all but left 11 runners on base on the day.
CN is now 11-1 and 3-0 in the North Bay League. Carrillo comes to Clyde Smith Field on Friday for a rematch. Then it's off to Sacramento for the Boras Classic on Monday for the highly ranked Cardinals.
