The Cardinal Newman softball team exploded for 6 runs in the 4th on the way to a 7-5 victory at Windsor on Thursday afternoon.
Paytin Salfi started the inning with her 9th homer of the year, for the first score of the game. Then after loading the bases and scoring on a walk,
Christell McCormick blasted a grand slam to make it 6-0 Cardinals.
Windsor countered with 3 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th to make it 6-5.
Tori Leighton had a big RBI single in the bottom of the 6th. This turned out to be an important insurance run heading to the 7th. Windsor batting in the top of the 7th, even though they were playing at home because of field conditions, loaded the bases.
Callie Howard would pitch out of the jam to hang on to a complete game. Howard finished with 3 strikeouts on the day.
Mackenzie Dennis had 2 hits and scored a run, including a double and
Sarah Khoury scored 2 runs in the win.
Newman will play at Rancho Cotate next week and then finish the regular season with 3 home games May 3,4 and 5.
The Cardinals are now 10-10 overall and 7-4 in the NBL. They are currently in second place just one game back of Rancho.
