Girls Soccer Wins Big on Senior Night

On an unusually warm night at Ed Lloyd Field the 2022 Girls Soccer team honored their 5 seniors in a very nice pre-game ceremony before taking on Ukiah in the final regular seasonsenior match up of the year.  Seniors Isabella Wright, Marije Rechin, Neala Kelley and Mila Bettinelli were presented with their families before the action got under way and there was plenty of action early on.

Ukiah, looking to spoil the party, scored first on a long shot that just cleared the cross bar and it was quickly 1-0 Wildcats.  Newman countered on a corner kick from Abella Hunter that twisted just inside the near post for a clean goal and a tie score at 1-1.

A few minutes later, Mila Bettinelli started a break away with a great pass to the midfield at the feet of Sofia Lightener.  Lightener sent it through beautifully to a streaking Marije Rechin.  Rechin took 3 dribbles then fired the ball squarely into the left corner to make it 2-1 Cardinals.

Newman would continue to dominate from there getting 3 more first half goals.  Abella Hunter, Alexander Barnes and Samantha Fenske would all find the net before intermission giving Newman a commanding 5-1 lead.

Ukiah would score again in the second half and so would CN, as Sienna Roy would close out the attack for Newman with an assist from Fenske.

The final 6-2 Cardinal Newman improving their record to 8-4 overall and 7-2 in NBL play.  They finish off the regular season on Thursday night at Windsor in a showdown of the league's top two teams.  A win for Newman ties them for the league title with the Jaguars.
