The Cardinal Newman Boys hoops team raced out to an early lead over Armijo of Fairfield and never looked back, winning 64-34. The first round victory launches Newman to the semi-finals where they meet Rancho Cotate on Friday night at 8pm.
Leading the way,
Sam Cline scored 16 points, while
Lucas Mauritson added 10. Other top scorers were
Andrew Krilich,
Leo Gonzalez and
Charlie Oandason with 8 points a piece.
Newman lead by 12 with the half about to end when
Leo Gonzalez hit a 3 at the buzzer to put Newman up 33-18. The Cardinals carried the momentum from that into the second half and pulled away to the 30 point win in the second half.
Sam Cline electrified the crowd with a couple of break away dunks, and Sophomore
Bryan Huertas pulled off an ankle breaking move to shake loose from a defender and hit a 3 during the the 4th quarter.
Other first round winners were Santa Rosa and Petaluma. The Panthers and the Trojans meet in the 6:30 semi-final on Friday night.
