VB- Cardinal Newman Bounces Back With Key Sweep of Rancho Cotate

With the league race entering its most important stretch and the postseason beginning to come into focus, Cardinal Newman picked up the kind of victory Tuesday night that could become increasingly valuable over the final weeks of the season.

The Cardinals bounced back from last week's loss to Windsor with an impressive straight-set victory over Rancho Cotate, sweeping the Cougars 25-19, 25-20, 25-16.

Cardinal Newman improved to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in league play, staying right in the middle of the championship race as the schedule turns toward the second half of league competition.

It was also a quality win against a Rancho Cotate team that entered the night with an 18-4 overall record and a 3-1 league mark.

For Newman, that made Tuesday night about more than simply getting back into the win column.

After a difficult night against Windsor last Thursday, the Cardinals needed a response. They got one against one of the better teams on their schedule.

"It was important for us to bounce back tonight against a quality opponent," Cardinal Newman head coach Daryl Kapis said. "We needed that tonight, and we're hoping we can keep the good vibes going moving forward."

Donnelly Leads Balanced Newman Attack

EMMA VB
Emma Donnelly lead CN with 15 Kils

Junior outside hitter Emma Donnelly turned in one of her strongest offensive performances of the season, finishing with a team-high 15 kills while hitting an impressive .538.

Donnelly's efficiency helped set the tone for a Newman offense that received contributions throughout the lineup.

Junior Gracie Acosta added eight kills and was also a major factor at the net defensively, recording three blocks.

Freshman Kensi Grover continued to contribute on both sides of the ball with seven kills and eight digs, while freshman middle hitter Eva Werle matched Acosta with three blocks — a season high for Werle.

The Cardinals also received another strong performance from junior setter Addison Smith, who distributed 33 assists while adding eight digs.

Junior Sabina Walsh led Newman with 11 digs as the Cardinals limited Rancho Cotate's opportunities to build sustained momentum.

It was the type of balanced performance Newman will need as the matches become increasingly important.

Cardinals Stay in the League Race

The victory keeps Cardinal Newman within striking distance of the top of the league standings with five league matches remaining.

That makes the second half of the schedule particularly significant.

Newman has already seen how little separates the top teams. A single loss can change the championship picture, while a strong run through the second half could put the Cardinals in position to challenge for the league title.

Tuesday's result also gives Newman an important head-to-head victory over a Rancho Cotate team that entered the match with only four losses all season.

The Cardinals now have an opportunity to build on it rather than spending the second half of the schedule trying to recover from consecutive defeats.

Win Could Carry Weight in NCS Playoff Picture

Tuesday night's victory could also prove significant when the North Coast Section postseason picture begins to take shape.

Cardinal Newman entered the week ranked No. 21 among NCS teams by MaxPreps, with Rancho Cotate sitting just three spots behind at No. 24. Windsor, which handed Newman its only league loss, was ranked No. 15.

Those rankings provide some context for the level of competition the Cardinals are facing during this portion of the schedule.

The loss to Windsor came against a team sitting inside the NCS Top 15. Newman then responded by sweeping another Top-25 NCS team in Rancho Cotate.

That is exactly the type of response the Cardinals wanted as they work toward both a league championship and a postseason berth.

Rancho Cotate's 18-4 record also adds significance to the result. Newman didn't simply defeat a team with a winning record — it swept a team that had won more than 80 percent of its matches entering Tuesday night.

The Cardinals' own strength-of-schedule number also stands out in the MaxPreps rankings. Newman entered the match with a 13.0 strength-of-schedule rating, considerably higher than Rancho Cotate's 4.5.

That suggests Newman's 11-5 record has been built against a challenging schedule, something that provides important context when comparing teams with different overall records.

While MaxPreps rankings should not be confused with the official NCS playoff seedings, the numbers illustrate why Tuesday's victory matters.

As the postseason approaches, Newman will have opportunities to continue strengthening its résumé. Winning league matches, adding victories against highly rated opponents and finishing the regular season playing its best volleyball could all help the Cardinals when the NCS brackets are eventually assembled.

A strong finish could also become important for playoff positioning. The difference between moving up or down several spots can mean a very different opening-round opponent — and potentially the difference between opening the postseason at home or on the road.

At No. 21 entering the week, Newman has plenty still to play for.

Five League Matches Remain

The league championship race provides even more immediate motivation.

Newman is now 4-1 in league play with five matches remaining, meaning the Cardinals have reached the halfway point with an opportunity to make a run at the title.

Every match from this point forward carries added weight.

The Cardinals will also get another opportunity later in the schedule to measure themselves against the teams around them in the standings. If Newman can continue winning, the league race could remain undecided deep into the final week.

That makes Tuesday's sweep especially important. Instead of allowing the Windsor loss to turn into a losing streak, Newman immediately answered with one of its better wins of the season.

Quick Turnaround Against Montgomery

There won't be much time to celebrate.

Cardinal Newman returns to the court Wednesday night against Montgomery as the Cardinals begin their second trip through the league schedule.

With only five league matches remaining, the margin for error becomes smaller with every match.

Newman enters the second half at 11-5 overall and 4-1 in league, still chasing a championship while simultaneously trying to strengthen its position for the NCS postseason.

Tuesday night showed the Cardinals can respond when challenged.

Now the goal is to turn that response into a run.
