Girls Soccer wins division rivalry game

The Newman girls Soccer team faced Marin Academy at home on Thursday night and came from behind to win 2-1. These teams have met twice for the Division 4 NCS Title and have been moved up to  D3.  This head to head win for Newman will be a great resume builder come NCS seeding time at the end of the year.  CN is now 3-1 against MA in pre-season battles.

Marin Academy dominated the first half, playing more aggressive and possessing the ball much more than the Cardinals.  The Wildcats would score first to take a 1-0 lead into the half.

Newman would come out more determined and try to go at the Wildcats and it worked.  Abella Hunter was fouled hard about 15 minutes in which lead to a free kick by Natalia Belmonte.  From 22 yards away Belmonte would hit the net and tie things up at 1.

Newman had Marin Academy on their heels and continued to pressure.  Several Corner Kicks would result and finally Abella Hunter would get one behind the defenders and go one on one near the goal.   She one timed it into the upper left corner for the game winner.

From there the defense held out and the Cardinals prevailed.

Up next, the team hits road to Ukiah on Saturday to face those Wildcats and gears up for some tough competition in the upcoming University Showcase in San Francisco next weekend.
